When my mom had a stroke, we had to make several modifications to her home to ensure her safety, including replacing the stair railings. The existing railings were too low, creating a serious fall risk. Kawartha Stair & Rail came out for a consultation, took the time to understand exactly what we needed, and walked me through the available options. From start to finish, they did exactly what they said they would do—no surprises, just excellent workmanship. The result is rock-solid, beautifully crafted, and gives us real peace of mind.

I can’t thank Paul and the people at Kawartha Stair & Rail enough for saving me from a terrible decision I had made. They truly got me out of a pickle and in a very elegant way.

Unfortunately, I did not do enough research when I started a project to replace a staircase in my home. It was to be a dream, custom, solid hickory staircase with glass & steel railings. I Googled local stair contractors and was browsing through their picture galleries when I spotted something similar to what I was picturing. I now wish it had been on Kawarthas site, but it was not. I Googled the business in question and there were no bad reviews (in fact there were none) and it was not black listed on the BBB so I foolishly trusted the few testimonials listed on their site because I was excited to move forward with the project and figured I wouldn’t have to do much explaining to get exactly what I wanted.

After a late start, poor communication, texts left unanswered for days, missed commitments to show up, late arrivals when they did show up, sloppy work that had to be pointed out to be corrected, additional payments being asked for mid project, more delays and missed deadlines…. after 4 months they hit a wall when it came time to install the final hand rail. They simply couldn’t figure out how to overcome a hurdle that THEY created. They had offset the upper railings from the edge of the floor opening to such an extent that the standard mounting brackets would not reach, or the railing would be installed on an angle and crooked. They had most of the money for the job at this point (not all of it thankfully) so they simply stopped responding to me. I finally reached out to Paul who came promptly, thought about things for a day and then came up with a beautiful design solution to the problem. (I have posted a photo of a simple and elegant solution he came up with to accommodate the offset) He gave a reasonable price and within a reasonable time had the work completed and installed. I couldn’t be happier with the work and work ethic of this company. We originally had Kawartha Stair and Rail design, build and install a staircase system in our new house construction in 2022. Not only was the product of very high quality but, the installation was professional and seamless.
Fast forward to 2025 where we had them do a minor repair on a railing post. Their response to our request was prompt, friendly and equally professional.
