I was introduced to the Quintessence White at a local restaurant. I was quite surprised and pleased. This is a white blend of Nova Scotia grapes- NY Muscat, Frontenac Blanc and L’Acadie.
The “official” tasting description is, “perfumed with floral aromas and hints of culinary sage. The palate is refreshing with notes of lychee and a juicy finish.”

Today we decided to go for a drive up to Wolfville and get ourselves some local wine.

And SURPRISE, SURPRISE! They make a very pleasant “Port-style” wine. I was impressed. The tasting notes read, “This fortified red wine is crafted from 100% Lucie Kuhlmann. The fermentation was stopped with our house made grappa, resulting in a sweet and spirited Port-style wine. Aged for 12 months in French oak.

Intense aromas of raisin, fig and plum. The palate is smooth, sweet and decadent, with notes of cherry, buttercream frosting and chocolate, reminiscent of black forest cake.”

Beautiful winery and restaurant in a peaceful area outside of town. Great food and selection of wines. The scenery is stunning.

A super disappointing experience.

Firstly, the good: the winery is beautiful, and the wines I had were nice. Server was friendly.

The not so good: this wasn’t a winery experience, but more like a restaurant experience where you can get a wine flight. Our server didn’t provide any explanation of the wines; attempts to ask questions about the different grapes used or tasted to expect (or really anything) went unanswered. The server was nice; it’s just that putting three glasses of wine on a generic paper card with a generic description doesn’t really feel like a winery experience. When we asked if we could try any of the other wines at the winery, we were told no, because they only taste what’s on tap.

As an industry professional, it was extremely disappointing. We were also informed a private tour wasn’t possible the day of (which is fair enough).

As an establishment serving food and alcohol it was fine. As a winery, it would be nice to see people passionate about the wine and interested in talking about it instead of just dropping a flight on a table and walking away.

We did 2 flights as they had a little bit of everything here: white, red, cider, mead and port. The lovey host maybe new, but was very sweet and knew enough about the wine to keep the conversation going.

We came at the beginning of the season, so had the place to ourselves and was able to talk about the place a little more than usual. A great representation of the region in the glass. We ended with the rummed cider and sparkly rose in the cans. Love the can formats for sparkling wine so you don’t feel like you need to pop a whole bottle when you want just a glass.

They also can ship across the country, except PEI, so you don’t have to lug it all the way home! Love NS wines, BC really should take note.

Stopped by on a lovely autumn Sunday afternoon. Having heard their Tidal Bay was a bit drier than normal, our goal was simple - have a quick taste and, provided that goes well, buy a few bottles to take home.

After asking three different staff and getting the most confused faces, we were asked to sit down and somebody would be with us.

We left about 10 minutes after that, having never talked to another server, tasting nothing, and buying nothing. All servers were seemingly just incompetent, and the older red haired server added rude to the mix.

The location is beautiful, however. Too bad about the people.
