My sisters and I did the glass workshop with Matthew which was an amazing experience that was both educational and creative.

Matthew is an astounding inventor and his makeshift machines are awe-worthy. He guided us through the design process very patiently and gave us tips and tricks to get the best results. There are so many stencil designs to choose from and you can mix and match them to be as creative as you’d like.

There are a variety of glass objects to select from including vases, tall and short glasses, and soap dispensers. Their main office also has ready made glass pieces and various artwork available for purchase as well.

We had a great time and made the perfect souvenir to take home!

Art and function in recycled form. Started with wine bottles but reaching to glass jugs and liquor bottles. Take the glass class, where you get to stencil a creation of your own with as many stencils you can put on your item. Matthew, the mastermind behind the studio and store, is a wealth of knowledge about Yellowknife and the community and ecological survival of the area. He has incredible stories, some a little long but effectively dramatic. With the class you get one item i.e. soap pump, vase, glass, bowl etc included but I highly recommend doing a second item for $25. Super fun, super easy and he will guide you through everything! I think this deal is better than just buying a piece but his works offer a lot to choose from.
And take a quick tour through the recycled bike parts and his bike repair shop.

I had the most awesome and lovely time at Old Town Glassworks! - Old Town Yellowknife is amazing and must be visited! I was staying in Old Town and the Glassworks is literally right across the street from where I was staying! The workshop is run by Matthew, who’s been doing it for decades; and he gives you a lot of History and interesting info on Old Town Yellowknife, as well as the newer downtown Yellowknife, and on the process of glass working. He’s a proper local, so he is a gem! And he is absolutely amazing at his craft. He is like MacGyver in his workshop! He takes you through (demos, and then helps you to do the process yourself) all the different processes and explains how he pieced the all the machinery together. It’s super impressive! He is a genius! And the product selection is excellent - lots of different colours and shapes of the glass as well as premade tankards and beautiful ceramic mugs - I chose to design and etch a ceramic mug - And there are so many stencils that you can choose from that capture all the different elements of Yellowknife; as well as reversed etching templates, which are super cool! I HIGHLY recommend doing a workshop here! Matthew is absolutely brilliant. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and I am beyond happy with my beautiful finished product. Thank you so much Matthew! If I ever have the honour of getting back to Yellowknife, I will most definitely be visiting you again! Cheers!
